Bloom Myofunctional & Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy in Plano, TX

Speech therapy, myofunctional therapy, and feeding therapy for Plano families — in person from our Far North Dallas office, or online. Led by Laura Friedman, MS, CCC-SLP, QOM.

Close Enough to Plano to Make Weekly Sessions Work

Bloom Myofunctional & Speech Therapy is based in Far North Dallas, at 6916 La Manga Drive, Dallas, TX 75248 — a short drive south of the Plano city line. We are not a Plano storefront, and we would rather be straightforward about that than pretend otherwise. What we are is close enough that a weekly appointment does not eat an afternoon, and flexible enough that the weeks it would can move to telehealth instead.

That combination matters more than it sounds like it should. Therapy works on consistency, and the most common reason a family stalls out is not the therapy — it is the logistics. Plano families see Laura Friedman directly, every session, rather than being routed to whoever is available that week.

School Services and Private Therapy Answer Different Questions

This is the question we hear most often from Plano parents, and it deserves a real answer rather than a sales pitch. A child can qualify for school-based speech services, be denied them, or be dismissed from them, and none of those outcomes tells you very much about whether private therapy would help.

School eligibility is a legal determination under IDEA. The team is deciding whether a communication difficulty has an adverse effect on educational performance. ASHA is clear that “educational performance is not limited to academic performance” and that a student with a disability cannot be denied service simply because there are no accompanying academic problems — but in practice, a bright child who is keeping up in class can still land outside a district's eligibility criteria.

Private therapy starts from a different place: clinical need. It is one-on-one rather than a small group, the session frequency is set by the plan of care rather than a caseload, and it can target things a school team is not obligated to address — a residual lisp, a tongue thrust flagged by an orthodontist, or feeding difficulties that show up at the dinner table rather than in the classroom.

The two are not in competition. Plenty of our families run both at once, with complementary goals. If you are not sure which you need, our guide to signs your child needs speech therapy is a reasonable starting point.

Why Plano Families Drive Down Here

Usually for a specialty that is genuinely hard to find nearby. Laura Friedman holds both the CCC-SLP and the Qualified Orofacial Myologist credential, which means myofunctional therapy and speech therapy can be evaluated by the same person in the same visit instead of being split across two providers who each see half the picture.

She is also PROMPT certified, DTTC trained, and an Apraxia Kids Preferred Provider — a combination that matters for families working through childhood apraxia of speech, where the approach a therapist is trained in genuinely changes what therapy looks like. With over 15 years of clinical experience, she treats children and adults.

In Person, Online, or Both

Plenty of Plano families mix the two. In-person sessions are the right call when hands-on cueing is the priority — PROMPT work, early feeding therapy, the first weeks of a myofunctional program. Telehealth covers the rest, and for the practice portions of a myofunctional program it works particularly well, since most of that work happens at home between sessions anyway.
